ARBORISTS - A CERTIFIED TREE SERVICE

5/13/2021

The definition of an arborist is defined as a tree surgeon. Arborists are certified professionals who specialize in the care of trees, shrubs, and perennials. They study proper management and growth.

Becoming A Certified Arborist

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is the credentialing institution for arborists. Before applying for credentials, applicants must have three years of full-time employment experience or three years of arboriculture education. After completing their requirements, applicants can take their examinations for their ISA Certified Arborist.

Types of Certifications

There are six different certifications within the ISA to specialize in a variety of three services. Certified Arborist, Certified Arborist Utility Specialist, Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist, Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist, Certified Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialist, and Board Certified Master Arborist.

A certified arborist gives an applicant a lot of flexibility in their tree service career. They may choose to continue their certification. Utility specialists complete 2,000 to 4,000 hours of electric utility vegetation management. Their specialties include vegetation management, electrical knowledge, storm response, and customer service.

Municipal Specialists go on to accrue three more years of work experience and specialize in the management of urban trees. During their three years, they must gain experience in customer service, administration, planning, risk management, and continued arboricultural practices.

Tree Workers Climber Specialists have the skill to climb trees. These specialists are tested in both the classroom and in the field. These arborists are also certified in safety procedures such as aerial rescue, CPR, and first aid.

Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialists are also required to be certified in CPR and first aid. They demonstrate their ability to perform safe tree and truck inspections.

Master Arborists are the highest achievement for any arborist. They pass a detailed scenario-based exam. Fewer than 2% of all arborists have this certification. If the arborist you are working with holds a Master Arborist Certification, you have found a very skilled and knowledgeable arborist.

The Right Arborist For The Right Tree Service

When choosing an arborist for your next tree service, the services required matter. For many tasks, a certified arborist will complete your job professionally and correctly. Whether you are looking for tree trimming, pruning, cutting, tree removal, or stump removal – certified arborists are qualified.

If you have an extensive project that requires the removal of large trees or heavily damaged trees – arborists with higher certifications may be necessary.

A Higher Level of Tree Service

Large mature trees are no simple task and can be very dangerous when not removed properly. Tall trees are removed in segments. Tree climbing and aerial lift specialists are essential in the removal process.  Using a boom truck, specialists will cut away the long branches. They cut way the branches methodically, ensuring that the tree stays balanced. If too much is cut away at once, the tree will become heavy on one side. Trees with uneven weight distribution are at risk of toppling over.

Tree specialists may also use ropes and pulleys to cut away and lower heavy branches at risk of falling uncontrollably. Uncontrolled branches can be dangerous to people and property. With experienced tree specialists, the removal process is the safest it can be. Certified Arborists should also carry two types of insurance – workers’ compensation and liability insurance.
